Orange and Honey Scones

Recipes

Scones are probably the most underrated breakfast/dessert option out there. Sweet, yet not too indulgent, they're perfect for serving on a crisp fall morning to the whole family. And frankly, we're appalled that mooncake has its own emoji (🥮) while scones have nothing.

This clean recipe for Orange Honey Scones comes to us from NomasteHungry. It's all-natural, with raw & unfiltered Local Hive Honey stepping up as a natural sweetener that actually adds flavor to the scone, not just sweetness.

Each Local Hive Honey has unique flavor depending on where it's from. Local Hive Colorado has a mellow, cinnamon-like taste. It's good for anything, but it's perfect for baked goods like these scones.

Honey is great for baking with, but requires changing your recipes slightly. Check out our blog on how to bake with honey instead of sugar. You can replace sugar in almost any recipe with raw & unfiltered honey once you know how.

Orange and Honey Scones Recipe

INGREDIENTS

300 grams all-purpose flour (about 2½ cups)
1 tsp baking soda
3 TBSP Local Hive Honey Colorado Honey
1 cup half and half
5 TBSP butter, cold
½ tsp baking salt
1 TBSP orange zest
2 TBSP orange juice
1 whole egg, whisked

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut the butter into chunks, then add to a food processor or blender with flour, salt, and baking soda.
2. Blend or pulse until flour combines with butter into a grainy texture.
3. Add the mixture to a medium bowl, and form a well in the middle. Pour in the Local Hive Honey, heavy cream, orange juice and orange zest.
4. Using a spatula or your hands, fold in the dough and knead until the dough just barely forms.
5. Pour out the dough onto a flour-dusted surface and continue to mix at least 5-6 more times until the dough forms more fully.
6. Flatten into a disc. Then cut into 6 triangles, like pizza slices. Lay flat onto a baking sheet and chill for up to 45 minutes.
7. Preheat oven to 400º. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Once dough has chilled, place scones onto the baking sheet then brush with the egg wash.
8. Bake scones for 20 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. Remove and set out for 10 minutes. Serve warm or room temperature.
