Brussels Sprouts and the Holidays: A Brief History

If you’ve ever wondered why Brussels sprouts are a side dish staple for holidays, it’s because they grow through the autumn months and are harvested just in time for holiday dinners. Although originating in Britain, Americans have adopted this tradition in a big way.

Sticky Honey Balsamic Brussels Recipe

INGREDIENTS

3 Tablespoons @localhivehoney
1lb brussels sprouts, washed and cut in half
3 Tablespoons balsamic glaze
2 cloves garlic
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
3 Tablespoons salted butter
3 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 450 and place baking sheet in oven to preheat the pan.
2. Wash and trim the bottom part of the Brussels sprouts, then slice in half.
3. Coat with extra virgin olive oil, salt, and pepper, then toss.
4. Once the oven is preheated, remove the baking sheet and spread the Brussels sprouts evenly on the baking sheet.
5. Cook for 25-30 minutes until roasted to your liking (some like them more brown and crispy).
6. While the Brussels are in the oven, make your sauce. First, brown the butter; place the butter in a small pan and heat. As soon as the butter starts to brown, add the crushed red pepper and garlic. Cook for 1 minute and remove from the heat.
7. Add balsamic glaze and honey.
8. Stir and pour over the Brussels.
9. Put them in your favorite holiday dish and serve.
